§ 2-43. Duties of the chief of police.

  • In addition to those duties and powers granted in other sections of the Code, the chief of police shall:

    (1)

    Execute and return all writs and processes as directed by the mayor, or as directed by other competent authority of the municipality.

    (2)

    Serve criminal writs and processes in the municipality.

    (3)

    Within the municipality, suppress all riots, disturbances and breaches of the peace; apprehend all disorderly persons; pursue and arrest any person fleeing from justice; and apprehend any person in the act of violating the laws of the state or the ordinances of the municipality and bring the person before competent authority for examination and trial.

    (4)

    Render such accounts of the police department, chief's duties, department operations and receipts as may be required by the mayor and board of aldermen and keep the records of the department and the chief's office open to public inspection at all reasonable times.

    (5)

    Having no authority to hire or fire policemen, he shall make recommendations to the mayor and board of aldermen for the appointment of police personnel, to effect disciplinary action and for dismissal of police personnel. He may suspend an officer pending action of dismissal by the mayor and board of aldermen, provided that he shall notify the town clerk no later than noon of the next business day of such suspension.

    (6)

    Maintain a procedures manual for personnel of the police department and update and amend the manual from time to time as may be necessary to keep the same consistent with current law and police standards.
