§ 2-35. Chief of police.

  • (a)

    The head of the police department shall be the chief of police. The chief of police shall reside within the municipal limits of the Town of St. Francisville or within a ten-mile radius of the Town Hall of the Town of St. Francisville, measuring from the northeast corner of the property upon which said Town Hall is situated. Notwithstanding any other provision of law or ordinance to the contrary, the chief of police shall not be elected at large but shall be appointed by the mayor and upon approval by a majority vote of the board of aldermen. The term of office of the chief of police shall be concurrent with that of the appointing mayor and board of aldermen. The board of aldermen shall set the salary of the chief of police upon recommendation of the mayor. The mayor and board of aldermen shall establish the duties and responsibilities of the chief of police. The chief of police shall report directly to the mayor.

    (b)

    The chief of police shall be appointed on or after the effective date of Act Number 412 of 1992, Regular Session, Louisiana State Legislature, and his term of office shall end as provided for hereinabove. Successive chiefs of police shall be appointed at the first meeting of each new term of the mayor and board of aldermen.
