§ 15.5-31. Surface area of signs.

  • The surface area of any sign shall be in direct proportion to the amount of front footage of each ownership, but shall have a maximum size. Surface areas shall be as follows:

    (1)

    Historic district residential/business/office area.

    a.

    The total area of an individual sign attached flat against the wall shall not exceed nine (9) square feet and the total area of multiple signs or double faced signs on a property shall not exceed twenty (20) square feet.

    b.

    Signs shall be limited to those pertaining to the name of proprietor and/or business; advertising goods and/or services; historic properties and/or structures; or rental, lease or sale of a building or land.

    c.

    No billboards or advertising benches are permitted in the historic district.

    (2)

    Historic commercial district.

    a.

    Single faced signs, attached flat against the wall and including painted wall signs shall be allowed thirty (30) square inches of sign surface to each foot of lot frontage.

    b.

    Double faced signs, suspended by brackets or arms perpendicularly from the wall of a building, shall be the sum of the area of each face not to exceed thirty (30) square inches of sign surface area to each foot of lot frontage. NOTE: For a fifty-foot lot this equals ten (10) square feet, (1500 ° 144 = 10.4 square feet).

    c.

    In the case of multiple businesses operating at a single location, the total face area of signage may be increased to 1 Y2 times of the maximum stipulated in this article.

    d.

    The total area of an individual sign shall not exceed twenty-four (24) square feet and the total area of all signs on a property shall not exceed forty-eight (48) square feet.

    e.

    Signs shall be limited to those pertaining to the name of proprietor and/or business; advertising goods and/or services; historic properties and/or structures; or rental, lease or sale of a building or land.

    f.

    No billboards or advertising benches are permitted in the historic commercial district.

    g.

    The top of any sign shall not exceed the height of the lowest point of the roof line.
