§ 15.5-1. Purpose.

  • (a)

    The purpose of this chapter is to limit signs in the Town of St. Francisville to those necessary to reasonably identify local businesses and historic resources in an environment compatible with to the zoning district in which said signs are located.

    (b)

    It is also the purpose that signs regulated by this chapter:

    (1)

    Provide information and directions to the public;

    (2)

    Protect and enhance the economic value of property in the town;

    (3)

    Encourage investment in the town's property;

    (4)

    Provide unity of sign scale and design in districts;

    (5)

    Protect the citizens of St. Francisville from hazardous structures;

    (6)

    Protect St. Francisville property owners from unnecessary liability; and

    (7)

    Increase the economic vitality of the town.

    (c)

    For purposes of this chapter the term "sign" means any writing, letter, word, or numeral; pictorial presentation; illustration or decoration; emblem; device, symbol, logo or trademark; flag; pennant; banner; or any other device, figure or character which is employed to announce, direct attention to, identify, or make known, and which is visible from a public street or sidewalk.

    (d)

    The chapter also defines the different types and arrangements of signs in different zoning districts in the town and specifies the appropriate levels of signage intensities permitted in these districts, while considering the different uses involved and their relationships to other signs and other urban elements in the environment.
